AI-Powered Patient Monitoring Strengthens Inpatient Care at Apollo Speciality Hospitals Madurai

Apollo Speciality Hospitals Madurai has introduced an AI-powered continuous patient monitoring system across all 150 inpatient beds, marking a significant advancement in technology-enabled inpatient care. The system continuously monitors patients' vital signs in real time, enabling clinicians to identify early signs of clinical deterioration and intervene promptly to support safer patient outcomes. The initiative also extends centralized monitoring to Apollo Reach Hospital, Karaikudi, through a shared command centre in Madurai, further strengthening connected care across the network.

The AI platform tracks key physiological parameters, including ECG, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation (SpO₂), temperature, blood pressure, and posture. It continuously analyses patient data, predicts the risk of clinical deterioration up to six hours in advance, and automatically calculates the National Early Warning Score (NEWS2), providing clinicians with an additional layer of clinical decision support.

According to Dr. V. Jude Vinoth, Senior Consultant and In-charge of the Department of Emergency Medicine, the system has helped reduce mortality among monitored patients. Patients are categorized into four colour-coded clinical risk zones — stabilization (green), enhanced care (orange), critical stabilization (red), and resuscitation (blue) — allowing clinical teams to prioritise care based on patient acuity. When a patient's condition triggers an orange alert, the monitoring team immediately notifies the duty doctor and nurse, facilitating timely intervention before the patient progresses to a more critical stage.

Dr. Nikhil Tiwari, Chief Operating Officer, Apollo Hospitals Tamil Nadu, said the AI-enabled platform represents an important step in integrating artificial intelligence into routine clinical care. Developed by LifeSigns, the technology is also expected to enable remote monitoring after hospital discharge, extending continuity of care beyond the hospital and supporting more scalable healthcare delivery.

Designed to support clinical judgement, the initiative forms part of Apollo Hospitals' Enhanced Connected Care programme, reinforcing Apollo Hospitals' commitment to digital innovation, patient safety, and evidence-based healthcare delivery.
