Apollo Children’s Launches South India’s First Centre of Excellence in Pediatric Robotic Urology

Apollo Children's Hospital, Chennai, has launched South India's first Centre of Excellence in Pediatric Robotic Urology, marking a significant milestone in advancing minimally invasive surgical care for children. Established in 2012 under the leadership of Dr. V. Sripathi, Senior Consultant Pediatric Urologist and Robotic Surgeon, the programme has grown into one of India's pioneering pediatric robotic urology initiatives and South India's first dedicated centre of its kind over the years, setting new benchmarks in clinical excellence, innovation, and patient outcomes. To date, the team has successfully performed more than 400 pediatric robotic urological procedures.

Apollo Children’s Launches South India’s First Centre of Excellence in Pediatric Robotic Urology

Since its inception, the programme has treated children across all age groups, with approximately 50% of patients under the age of 5 and 10% being infants younger than 1 year. Demonstrating the precision and safety of robotic-assisted surgery even in very young patients, the smallest child successfully treated was just 50 days old and weighed only 3.5 kilograms.

The Centre of Excellence in Pediatric Robotic Urology at Apollo Children’s Hospital will provide advanced robotic-assisted treatment for a wide range of congenital and acquired urological conditions in children. By combining high-definition three-dimensional visualisation with enhanced surgical precision, robotic technology enables complex procedures through small incisions, helping reduce postoperative pain, minimise blood loss, shorten hospital stays, and support faster recovery in appropriately selected patients.

Ms. Sindoori Reddy, Director – Strategy, Apollo Hospitals, noted that the CoE reflects Apollo's commitment to advancing pediatric care through robotics and precision AI while expanding access to world-class minimally invasive surgery and helping shape the future of pediatric urological care. Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, Chief Executive Officer, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai Region, and  Dr. Sushila Narayanasamy, Unit Head, Apollo Women’s & Children’s Hospitals, inaugurated the CoE.

This reinforces Apollo Hospitals' commitment to advancing pediatric surgical innovation through specialised expertise, technology-enabled care, and improved outcomes, while expanding access to advanced robotic surgery for children across South India and beyond.
