Lt Gen (Dr) Velu Nair is a leading Hemato-oncologist and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) physician in the country with over 30 years of experience. He has performed over 1000 BMTs in the public and private hospitals and has significant experience in treating both adult & pediatric patients with various blood cancers and other blood disorders. He pioneered the setting up of several BMT and Hematology centres in the Armed Forces.
He is a recognized teacher and examiner for MBBS, MD & DNB (Medicine), DM (Clinical Haematology) and PhD in various universities in the country. He is the recipient of President’s gold medal in MBBS and 1st rank holder in MBBS and MD from the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) Pune. He is a recipient of the highest award for distinguished services in the Armed Forces, the ‘Param Vishisht Seva Medal’ (PVSM), by the President of India and also the recipient of other presidential awards, ‘Ati Vishisht Seva Medal’ (AVSM), and ‘Vishisht Seva Medal’ (VSM) twice in 2004 & 2008. He was also awarded the NBE Teacher award for Excellence in Medical Education (Scroll of Honor) in 2014 by the National Board of Examination (NBE), Eminent NBEMS Distinguished Teacher award in 2024 by the Association National Board Accredited Institutions (ANBAI), Medical Value Travel Awards 2025 for BMT by FICCI and the Apollo Clinical Excellence Award for his distinguished services in the field of Hematology and BMT.
He is the President-Elect of the prestigious National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), and of the Indian Myeloma Academic Groupe (IMAGe). He is past President of both “Indian Society of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine” and “Delhi Society of Haematology”.
He is an avid researcher and has conducted several Clinical Trials at the National & Institutional level; published over 350 articles/chapters/abstracts in the various International and National Journals and authored 3 books on Medicine. He chaired the drafting committee responsible for formulating, the National guidelines on Haematopoietic Cell Transplantation (ICMR), Accreditation Standards for HCT and Cellular Therapy (QAI), Venous Thromboembolism (NAMS), and Nuclear Accident Management for Asia Pacific Blood and Marrow Transplantation Group (APBMT).
