Indigestion vs Appendicitis: Symptoms, Warning Signs and Surgery

We have all experienced a heavy stomach, bloating, or abdominal cramping after a spicy or irregular meal. Usually, an antacid and a little time resolve the discomfort. But what happens when that abdominal pain is actually a medical emergency?

Appendicitis, an inflammation of the appendix, demands rapid surgical intervention. Misinterpreting it as simple indigestion can lead to a ruptured appendix, a life-threatening infection.

Mapping the Pain: Indigestion vs. Appendicitis

How do you know if your appendix is reaching a critical stage? Pay close attention to how the pain travels and behaves:

  • The Indigestion Blueprint: Pain is usually felt in the upper abdomen or directly behind the breastbone. It often presents as a dull burning sensation, is frequently accompanied by acid reflux or burping, and tends to improve after a bowel movement or antacid.
  • The Appendicitis Blueprint: The pain classically begins as a dull ache around the belly button before shifting definitively to the lower right side of the abdomen. The pain becomes sharp, intensifies rapidly over a few hours, and worsens significantly when you cough, walk, or press down on the area.

Other Emergency Warning Signs

True appendicitis is rarely a solo symptom. It is almost always accompanied by:

  • An inability to pass gas
  • Low-grade fever that rises as the inflammation worsens
  • Nausea and acute vomiting

Warning: If you suspect appendicitis, avoid taking laxatives or using heating pads, as these can trigger a rupture.

The Modern Solution: Laparoscopic Appendectomy

If diagnosed early, the appendix can be safely removed through minor incisions. Laparoscopic appendix removal at Apollo ensures minimal blood loss, a rapid discharge window, and a fast track back to your normal daily routine.

If you or a loved one are experiencing acute lower abdominal pain, do not wait for complications to arise. Get evaluated immediately by Dr Shalin Dubey's surgical team at Apollo Hospitals.
