Frequently Asked Questions

What is a minor skin graft, and when is it required?

A minor skin graft is a thin layer of skin applied over a small wound that cannot undergo normal healing. Minor skin grafts may be needed for burns, other injuries, infections or minor surgical defects.

Where is skin taken from for grafting?

Common donor sites are the thigh, buttock, or, most commonly, the upper arm, depending on the type of graft.

How long does it take to heal after skin grafting?

Initial healing occurs within a few days, and full healing and maturation are completed over several months.

Is skin grafting painful?

There may be mild discomfort, especially at a donor site, but it will become progressively less as healing progresses.

Will the graft match the surrounding skin tone?

The graft blends gradually and becomes closer in tone over time, especially with proper care.

Can skin grafts fail, and what causes that?

Failure is uncommon, but it can occur if there are infections within the wound, if the graft site is challenging to move, or if there is not enough blood supply.
