Apollo Hospitals Chennai launches India’s first Robotics & Telesurgery Program

~ New initiative focused on advancing robotic surgery, digital surgery and remote surgical collaboration ~Chennai, 13 March 2026: Apollo Hospitals Chennai has launched the Apollo Institute of Robotics & Telesurgery (ART), a new initiative aimed at advancing robotic surgery, digital surgery and remote surgical collaboration. The announcement was made during the 6th Apollo International Colorectal Symposium (AICRS) 2026, which brought together leading surgeons, scientists and technology pioneers from across the world to discuss the future of colorectal cancer surgery and technology-enabled care. The symposium highlighted the rapid evolution of technology-driven colorectal care, with discussions focused on robotic surgery, digital surgical platforms and emerging telesurgical innovations that are transforming surgical access and outcomes globally. A major highlight presented during the symposium was the Apollo Rectal Cancer (ARC) Programme at the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, Chennai a comprehensive multidisciplinary initiative designed for the management of complex rectal cancers. The programme integrates colorectal surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, specialist nurses, nutritionists and rehabilitation experts to deliver coordinated, patient-centred cancer care.  Another milestone highlighted was the growing adoption of robotic colorectal surgery at Apollo Hospitals. Dr. Venkatesh Munikrishnan and his team have completed over 1,000 robotic colorectal procedures, including one of the largest personal series of robotic rectal cancer resections in the region. This experience has helped position Apollo Hospitals Chennai as a subspecialist centre for rectal cancer treatment and an important training hub for advanced robotic colorectal surgery, attracting surgeons and fellows from across India and internationally. Speaking about the initiative, Prof Dr Venkatesh Munikrishnan, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon & Clinical Lead Institute of Colorectal Surgery and Chairperson AICRS 2026 said, “Rectal cancer treatment today requires a highly coordinated multidisciplinary approach. The Apollo Rectal Cancer Programme was developed to ensure patients benefit from the combined expertise of surgeons, oncologists and allied specialists working together to deliver personalised, evidence-based care. The integration of technologies such as robotic surgery has significantly enhanced surgical precision, particularly in complex pelvic procedures, improving outcomes while preserving quality of life.” Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Founder Chairman and CEO, SS Innovations, said, “Robotic surgery has already transformed how complex operations are performed by enabling greater precision, control and visualisation for surgeons. The next natural progression is telesurgery, which will redefine how surgical expertise is delivered across geographies. Technologies such as the Mantrasana telesurgery platform are designed to bridge the gap between centres of excellence and hospitals that may not have access to subspecialist expertise, ensuring that patients, regardless of location, can benefit from the highest standards of surgical care.”Looking ahead to the next phase of surgical innovation, Apollo Hospitals announced the launch of the Apollo Institute of Robotics and Telesurgery (ART), a new initiative aimed at advancing robotic surgery, digital surgery and remote surgical collaboration. Present at the launch were Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, Chief Executive Officer - Chennai Region, Apollo Hospitals and Mr. Karan Puri, Chief Executive Officer - Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Teynampet & Apollo Proton Cancer Centre. Co-chaired by Prof Dr Steven D Wexner, System Chief, Colorectal Surgery, Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, Washington DC, USA and Prof. Manish Chand, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon & Associate Professor, University College London, UK and hosted by the Institute of Colorectal Surgery at Apollo Hospitals Chennai, AICRS 2026 reflects a decade-long effort to advance subspecialisation in colorectal surgery, transforming what was once a general surgical field into a highly specialised discipline driven by precision, technology and multidisciplinary cancer care.Click here to know more.

Doctors at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai Successfully Performs Robotic Hysterectomy on Patient with Rare Bleeding Disorder

A multidisciplinary team at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, has successfully performed a robotic hysterectomy on a 37-year-old woman diagnosed with Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia, a rare genetic condition that severely impairs the blood’s ability to clot and can lead to life-threatening bleeding episodes.    L to R: Dr. Punit Jain - Sr Consultant Hematology, Hemato Oncology & Program Coordinator Bone Marrow Transplant & CAR T-cell Therapy, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, Mrs. Neelam Yadav (Patient), Dr. Tripti Dubey - Sr Consultant Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Robotic Surgery, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, and Mr. Sudhir Yadav (Patient's husband). The patient had endured years of severe menstrual bleeding that often required hospitalisation and blood transfusions. During a recent episode, her haemoglobin level dropped to a critically low 4 g/dL, prompting doctors to recommend a hysterectomy as a definitive solution to prevent recurrent bleeding and improve her long-term quality of life. Doctors also noted that the woman had previously delivered a child through a Caesarean section and required multiple blood and platelet transfusions at the time due to complications related to her underlying bleeding disorder. Surgery in patients with Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia is particularly complex due to the risk of uncontrolled bleeding, even from minor surgical interventions. To mitigate these risks, the clinical team opted for a robotic assisted minimally invasive procedure. The surgery was led by Dr. Tripti Dubey (Senior Consultant – Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Robotic Surgery, Apollo Hospitals) in collaboration with Dr. Punit Jain (Consultant – Haematology, Hemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist, Apollo Hospitals), combining expertise in robotic gynaecology and haematology to carefully manage the patient’s clotting disorder. The surgery was completed with near-zero intraoperative blood loss and without the need for transfusion during the procedure — a remarkable achievement given the patient’s underlying condition. Following a monitored postoperative recovery, the patient stabilised well and was able to resume routine activities soon afterward. This case underscores the growing role of robotic surgery in managing complex, high-risk conditions. By enabling enhanced precision, smaller incisions, and improved control during delicate procedures, robotic platforms are helping clinicians expand the boundaries of safe surgical care for patients with rare and challenging disorders.

Its advanced signal processing and stimulation technologies enhance sound clarity in challenging listening environments, supporting better speech recognition and communication. In the coming weeks, the child will enter the next phase of treatment, during which the external sound processor will be activated and programmed to optimise hearing outcomes. She is recovering well and remains under careful clinical observation as part of the post-operative care protocol. Dr. Venkatakarthikeyan emphasized, “Consistent access to sound through this future-ready technology can significantly aid a child’s speech, language, and cognitive development while fostering social engagement.” Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO – Chennai Region, Apollo Hospitals, added, “This achievement reflects our commitment to delivering cutting-edge hearing solutions to children across India and neighbouring countries. We continue to invest in advanced technologies and multidisciplinary care to ensure the best long-term outcomes.” The introduction of this technology expands treatment options for paediatric hearing loss in Tamil Nadu and surrounding regions, offering renewed hope for improved communication, academic progress, and overall quality of life.

Apollo Hospitals Chennai excels in Hip Arthroscopy; helps a 15 year old return to normal life
Post the launch of the Center of Excellence in Hip Arthroscopy early this year, Apollo Hospitals has successfully treated 5 patients using this procedure. Continuing to excel in Orthopaedics, Apollo Hospitals,Chennai – Indias leading healthcare service provider showcased its expertise in handling complex cases using Hip Arthroscopy procedure. A cutting edge procedure that involves viewing the interior of the hip joint through an arthroscope and then using minimally invasive techniques to treat the disorder, experts believe that hip arthroscopy, will soon gain popularity. 15 year old student from Kolkata came to Apollo Hospitals, Chennai with severe pain in the hip for almost 15 days, which made it difficult for him to perform regular activities like walking. Doctors, here, on further diagnosis identified that he was suffering from synovitis of the hip, for which Hip Arthroscopic synovial biopsy was done. The Hip Arthroscopy procedure, performed in less than a day, enabled mobilization post the procedure. Speaking about the advantages of Hip Arthroscopy, Dr Madan Mohan Reddy, Senior Consultant, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals,Chennai said, “Hip arthroscopy provides the advantage of reducing the need for hip replacement procedure, which is quite complex. In addition to this, it is a day care procedure where the patients experience very little pain, minimal blood loss and can also be mobilised quite quickly. People are aware of this procedure and we expect more people to opt for Hip Arthroscopy in the coming months as opposed to open surgery, because of its advantages.”, he added. Hip Arthroscopy is an intricate and technically demanding domain that has been perfected by few healthcare providers and Apollo Hospitals has been successful in leveraging this new technique for the benefit of patients. The institute is equipped with technologies for advanced spinal treatment procedures like Robotic Spinal Surgery, Disc Replacement and Scoliosis Surgery.

Apollo Hospitals observes World Heart Rhythm Week
Apollo Hospitals conducts free consultation for people suffering from Cardiac Arrhythmia from June 6 to June 12, 2011. Cardiac Arrhythmia, or an abnormal heartbeat, is a serious but treatable condition that has affected roughly 8 million Indians in a short period. Hence, Apollo Hospitals feels that free, simple and routine pulse checks would help to save thousands from death or disability resulting from heart rhythm disorders. Apollos Heart Rhythm Week is intended to create awareness and promote better understanding of arrhythmic conditions. Arrhythmias occur when the electrical impulses in the heart, which coordinate the heartbeats don’t function properly, causing the heart to beat too fast, too slow or irregularly. These cardiac rhythm disturbances can occur because of age, hypertension, heart attack, lung and thyroid disease and heart failure etc. Palpitation, dizziness, fatigue, fainting are few of the common symptoms. Detecting arrhythmias at the early stages could improve a patients chance of finding a successful treatment and could save their life. Hence, Apollo is dedicating an entire week for free pulse & BP check and consultation to ensure people to know their pulse and be aware of cardiac arrhythmia. Cardiac arrhythmia can be treated effectively, through drugs, devices, Radiofrequency catheter ablation procedure or a combination of all the three. Apollo Hospitals is one of the few hospitals in India to have most advanced 3D mapping technology [CARTO 3 system]. This technology helps to pin point the site of origin of rhythm disturbances and accurately deliver the Radio frequency energy. Apollo uses this technology to cure complex and life threatening arrhythmias with high success rate. Apollos Heart Rhythm Week runs from 6 to 12 June 2011. Apollos renowned cardiologist & Electrophysiologist, Dr. Karthigesan will do free consultations and pulse checks from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm, the entire week. Apollos Heart Rhythm week not only concentrates on creating awareness by free consultations but also aims to build confidence in the affected on the treatments available to curb the disease. Green Corridor created across two states for a Liver Transplant, first of its kind in South Tamil Nadu at Madu...
A green corridor is a smooth and obstruction-free passage provided to the ambulance by appropriate traffic management authorities. A 51-year-old woman’s life was saved in Madurai thanks to a quick team of transplant doctors and Tamilnadu traffic police officials who worked together to get her a liver transplant on time. Around 6 am, a liver had been harvested from a patient declared brain dead in Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry and through a well equipped ambulance and a team of doctors, it was flown and needed to be transported to the South of Tamilnadu, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Madurai immediately so that the transplant surgery could take place without the loss of valuable time. The area is usually heavily congested with traffic. On an average, it takes at least 6 hours to 8 hours to go from Pondicherry to Madurai without traffic. Thanks to the green corridor, the ambulance carrying the liver reached the hospital in a record 3 1/2 hours. The police officers from Vizhupuram, Trichy and Madurai traffic circles and control room coordinated with the Transport Coordinator of the hospital to decide the logistics. While the traffic official (head of a traffic circle) rode in a Jeep as pilot for the ambulance, senior officers monitored the real-time progress of the team on wireless sets. Cops were posted in every intersection along the route to ensure that the ambulance did not have to stop at any point. All traffic lights along the way were turned green for the ambulance, and cross-traffic along the route stopped as the ambulance passed through. Throughout the highway, the loudspeakers and sirens are used to inform other vehicles on the road so that they remained aside while the ambulance passed through.

Apollo Cradle, Chennai helps woman with Rheumatological complications to deliver a healthy baby boy
In yet another example of clinical excellence by Apollo Hospitals, Apollo Cradle, the premier birthing center, today showcased its expertise in handling high-risk pregnancies by helping a woman with not one but two rheumatological complications deliver a healthy baby boy. Mrs Shyamala approached Dr S Ramakrishnan, Senior Rheumatologist, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai with a history of previous foetal loss in her first pregnancy. Examination of her records revealed that she had a combination of two Rheumatic diseases, generally associated with bad pregnancy outcomes. The two diseases were Primary Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome and Neonatal Lupus, which have always been a challenge to Rheumatologists in terms of management. Speaking about the condition, Dr S Ramakrishnan said, “Some women during pregnancy have substances called Anti-Ro and Anti-La antibodies in the maternal blood, which cross the placenta and damage foetal conduction system and heart muscles. This damage results in complete heart block or heart failure ultimately leading to foetal death. This condition is called neonatal lupus.” Mrs Shyamala had another coexistent Rheumatological disease named Primary Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome, which is also associated with increased risk of foetal demise, due to risk of blood clot during pregnancy. The blockade of blood supply to the foetus results in foetal demise. “We have seen that administering a combination of blood thinners and intravenous immunoglobulin at appropriate frequencies can prevent foetal death and ensure successful delivery. Mrs Shyamala was administered intravenous immunoglobulin on the 12th, 15th, 18th, 21st and 24th week of pregnancy and underwent frequent echocardiography to detect foetal heart block and there was no evidence of heart block in the test done,” Dr Ramakrishnan added. She was followed meticulously by Dr Kondammal, Senior Consultant Obstetrician at Apollo Cradle. The pregnancy went through successfully and a healthy male new born was delivered by Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) on the 37th week of her pregnancy.

Government’s new Health initiative ‘SEHAT’ launched in association with Apollo Hospitals
On 25th August 2015, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, Hon’ble Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology, and Union Minister of Law and Justice launched the government’s latest health and IT initiative called SEHAT (Social Endeavour for Health And Telemedicine) at the India Habitat Centre in Delhi today. This venture with Apollo Hospitals was the first of its kind in India to connect 60,000 Common Service Centers across the country to a common network and provide healthcare access to millions of citizens irrespective of geographical location or connectivity. Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Chairman – Apollo Hospitals said: This initiative of ‘SEHAT’, shall connect the largest population of our country on a common network to avail telehealth services. Apollo Hospitals has always been committed to providing the Digital Dividend to all Indians. We are very proud to have launched India’s first Telemedicine centre in 2000, in Aragonda and it was inaugurated by the then President of the United States, Mr. Bill Clinton. Through our PM’s ‘Digital India’ initiative more Indians shall get access to e-services and we are delighted to be a partner with the GOI in this path breaking endeavour to link SEHAT to 60,000 Common Service Centers. Ms. Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals said: “Telemedicine can provide rural population access for basic, specialty and super specialty consultations. Since 80% of the conditions do not require a doctor’s physical presence immediately, they can be dealt with through telemedicine. Most lifestyle and communicable diseases fall into this category. It is indeed a privilege for us to work with the Government of India and the Hon’ble Minister in making history by starting the world’s largest telemedicine program in the world today.” The Apollo Group launched the first telemedicine centre in the country in 2000. Through this, the hospital has been able to reach geographically remote and inaccessible regions of the country and the world to better enable the reach of medical treatment. The Group operates one of the country’s largest telemedicine networks and has partnered with the Indian Space Research Organization, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Governments from the Africa, CIS and Pacific Rim nations to provide access to quality medical services.

Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata demonstrates the benefits of organ donation
Liver Transplantation is the greatest development in the field of medical science. The robust Liver Transplant Program in Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata has highly skilled Liver transplant surgeons, Hepatologists, specialized Anaesthetists and Intensive Care experts. Dedicated and specially trained nurses form an important part of the team. Each year hundreds of Indians die while waiting for an organ transplant. This is because there is an acute imbalance between the number of organs donated and the number of people waiting for a transplant. Fifteen years after India passed the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, allowing organ retrieval from brain-dead patients, most kidney and liver donations still come from living donors. The event was addressed by Dr Rupali Basu, President & CEO- Eastern Region, Apollo Hospitals Group, India, who felicitated the liver donor and recipients, highlighted that enhanced awareness is needed to encourage people to donate organs. “We would like to highlight the human face of donation and Transplantation by focusing on the recipients of this incredible gift without forgetting the generosity of the donor families”, added Dr Basu, while motivating people to pledge organs. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Mahesh Kumar Goenka, Director and Consultant Gastroenterology, stated, “A liver transplant is recommended when all other treatment options fail and then on, inaction could be fatal. The purpose of transplantation is to replace the diseased liver with a healthy liver. Ideally, after a transplant, a patient will be free from disease and can lead a fairly normal life. Despite of the initiatives taken for education of the masses towards cadaveric organ donation, we are still receiving a very few cadaveric organ donors.” Dr Anand Khakhar, Senior Consultant and Program Director for The Centre for Liver Disease & Transplantation, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, added, “Liver and other organs such as kidney and Pancreas can be retrieved from healthy individuals. However, a bigger resource can be, recently deceased (Brain dead) individuals, who or whose family has agreed for organ donation. In such situation, one can utilize the liver, two kidneys, two corneas, pancreas, lungs, heart and intestine and one individual can save almost 9-10 lives.” Dr Anil Vaidya, Senior Consultant, Multivisceral Transplant surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, adds, “The only established cure for diabetes is through a successful pancreatic transplant. The source of this organ is either from a ‘brain dead’ donor or a ‘live-related’ donor. Transplantation not only extends life, but, also rehabilitates a diabetic to a life of physical, social, psychological well being and self perception of normality; control over one’s destiny, with fewer restrictions and enhanced capacities leading to improved sense of independence.”
