14-year-old boy, Youngest in the City to undergo Whipple’s Surgery
A Young 14-year-old boy got a new lease of life after he underwent a complex and rare for age Whipples Procedure (Pancreaticoduodenectomy) performed by the Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysore. The boy had a history of pain in his abdomen for the last 4 years that recently got severe leading to the child unable to tolerate the pain and consume oral diet.An Endoscopic Ultrasound performed showed Complex Cystic lesion of Size 7×6 cms in the head of the Pancreas. A further workup with detailed CT scan showed compression of the main vein (Portal Vein) connecting to the Liver causing multiple collaterals while the Cyst fluid analysis suggested a doubtful tumorous lesion. A Multidisciplinary Team comprising of GI Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Radiologists chalked out a meticulous Surgical approach to treat the lesion after obtaining the family consent.Explaining about the rare procedure Dr. Nairuthya S., Consultant Chief Gastrointestinal Surgeon, said “The Surgery went on for nearly 6 hours due to its complicated anatomy. Though we had planned for venous resection, we were able to painstakingly dissect off the tumour from the Superior Mesenteric Vein and perform a Whipple’s Procedure” Dr. Yeshwanth Kumar V., Consultant Hepato Biliary & Liver Transplant Surgeon said The Surgery was quite challenging but we could perform it successfully with a smooth post operative recovery. The child was discharged within a week and is doing well on follow up and is now able to consume normal diet. We are happy to see the child getting back to normalcy” The Clinical Team comprised of Dr Rajkumar P. Wadhwa, Chief Gastroenterologist, Dr. Aathira Ravindranath, Consultant Pediatric Gastroenterologist and Dr. Arun N., Consultant Anaesthesiologist, Apollo BGS hospitals.Addressing the media persons Mr. N. Endoscopic Gastro-Jejunostomy- A Novel Procedure for Intestinal Block performed at Apollo BGS Hospitals for th...
Apollo BGS Hospitals, Institute of Gastrosceinces has performed a rare and novel Endoscopic Gastro-Jejunostomy procedure for the first time in Karnataka and in the city of Mysuru, helping a 49 yrs. old patient recover from his ailment. At Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysore, the availability of Endoscopic ultrasound expertise under Dr. Rajkumar P. Wadhwa, Chief Gastroenterologist and HOD Institute of Gastroscience, Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysore, opened new doors for the patient that could avoid an open surgery. The 49 Years old male patient had a cancer of pancreas and underwent surgical resection (Whipple’s pancreaticoduodenectomy) 5 Years back. There was a recurrence of tumour which caused blockage of the intestinal loop that was also draining the bile. Due to poor bile flow, patient developed infection in the bile (cholangitis) and pus collection in his liver. He had abdominal pain, distension and vomiting. He could not consume food orally. As a routine if such a scenario ensues, the option is to undergo open surgery to relieve the obstruction. Instead, he underwent the endoscopic procedure to get relieved of his pain and be able to consume food.Performing the novel procedure ‘Endoscopic Ultrasound guided Gastrojejunostomy’ Dr. Rajkumar P. Wadhwa said “We placed a self-expanding metal stent between the stomach and a loop of small intestine. This opened up the pathway for drainage of bile and the intestinal secretions and as a result of which the patient’s infection and jaundice resolved, he was able to eat normally and was discharged within 24 hours of the procedure”Mr. Bharateesha Reddy, Vice-President and Unit Head, Apollo BGS Hospitals, informed that this is the first time the rare procedure Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) guided Gastrojejunostomy has been performed in the state of Karnataka. Very few centres in India have the expertise to perform this procedure, making us one among the select few hospitals in the country and we are extremely proud of it. This is a breakthrough achievement for us defining our advancement and progression in the Gastroscience excellence”The state-of-the-art Endoscopic procedure coupled with clinical skill of the Gastroenterologists at Apollo BGS Hospitals has helped the patient avoid a major open surgery, prolonged hospital stay and delayed recovery

Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysore | 95 Year old treated for Brain Stroke
A new lease of life for a 95-year-oldA nonagenarian gets a new lease of life after she was recently treated for a brain stroke.Mysuru, July 8th 2022: In a recent development, the Neurologists at Apollo BGS Hospitals successfully treated a 95-year-old Brain Stroke patient through Mechanical Thrombectomy successfully.A ninety-five-year-old lady, who was healthy and functionally independent, suffered from sudden onset of weakness in the right side of the body and difficulty in speech. As an early witness to the course of events, the patient’s son realised that his mother may have had a stroke and brought her immediately to Apollo BGS Hospital. Once in the hospital, the emergency stroke code was activated. Emergency brain scans revealed blockage of the main artery that supplies blood to the left side of the brain. Doctors at Apollo BGS Hospital counselled the attenders regarding the need to open up the vessel immediately to prevent permanent damage to the brain. The scan also revealed that the patient had suffered a silent, undetected stroke a few days ago, preventing the doctors from giving an intravenous injection to dissolve the clot. She underwent mechanical thrombectomy in which the clot within the blood vessel was removed through a small hole in the groin artery. To the joy and relief of doctors and attenders, she became normal within a few hours of the procedure. She could communicate as before and walk independently in 2 days.Stroke is a devastating disease; if not treated immediately, it might have resulted in permanent disability, making her entirely dependent on others even for daily needs. It could have been fatal too.The treatment for ischaemic stroke (blockage of a blood vessel) is limited by time – up to 4.5 hours in cases where the clot can be dissolved using intravenous medicine (tissue plasminogen activator – rTPA) or up to 6 hours in cases where the clot can be manually extracted out through endovascular route. Mechanical thrombectomy is indicated explicitly in stroke due to blockage of larger vessels. The damage to the brain is irreversible, and chances of recovery are high if the treatment is initiated early and blood supply to the brain is restored. Procedures with good outcomes are possible when expertise and technological advancements meet under a single roof.Dr. Vinay Hegde, Neurointerventional Radiologist, Apollo BGS Hospitals, said, “In elderly, mechanical thrombectomy procedure may be complicated due to tortuous nature of vessels and other comorbidities. Recent guidelines have been expanded to include elderly patients (>80years) to make them disability-free. This is the oldest patient treated at Apollo BGS Hospital, Mysore”Dr. Aumir Moin, Senior Consultant Neurologist, said “Time is brain” is suitable for all ages. IV Thrombolysis and Mechanical Thrombectomy have good results in older adults also. In this case, the credit goes to the patient attender for taking a quick decision despite her advanced age. Because Quality of life matters, especially in older adults. “Apollo BGS Hospitals has introduced free ambulance service in and around Mysore to benefit people in case of medical emergencies like heart attacks. A Stroke attack calls for immediate medical attention and reaching the hospital at the earliest needed.

N., Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon and Head of Institutes of Orthopaedics, Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysore. The patient, Srikantaiah N. was rushed to the emergency with complaints of pain in the left hip region after he had a fall at home. The intra-operative and immediate post-operative period was uneventful. Dr. BKG said, “Given the patient’s advanced age, there are many risks associated with performing the surgery, which we evaluated. Devising a comprehensive management plan to overcome any possible challenges, we decided on performing the surgery on the patient for a quicker and safer recovery avoiding all possible risks. A minimal incision of 5-6 cms instead of 14-15 cms was made to avoid blood loss, and the hip replacement was carried out. The surgery was completed in 20 minutes. Within 24 hours of performing the surgery, the patient was back on his feet.Dr. Adarsh, Consultant Anaesthesiologist said “Per-operative anaesthesia was given only to the affected limb to avoid any complications. The patient responded well to the treatment and he was mobilised the next day of the surgery bearing full weight on his operated limb”.Appreciating the surgical expertise of the doctor and faster recovery process of his father, Mr. Nanjundaswamy, 75 Yrs, expressed his happiness on getting his father back to his feet with lesser hospital stay of just 4 days which otherwise would take more than 15 days in other countries, as expressed by his family members living abroad.Mr. Bharateesha Reddy, Vice President and Unit Head, Apollo BGS Hospitals, informed that The Institute of Orthopaedics every year performs nearly 1300 plus surgeries out of which about 100 plus are on patients above 80 yrs and up to 100 yrs, having multiple ailments like comorbidities, lung diseases, urinary issues, cancer etc., enabling them to stay mobile and lead an everyday life till their natural life expectancy, who would otherwise reach the end stage much sooner. Apollo OMR Marks a Milestone in Robotic Joint Replacement: 150 Surgeries, 150 Days
Chennai, 15 October 2025: Apollo Speciality Hospitals, OMR records a milestone in joint care by successfully completing over 150 Robotic Total Knee Replacements (TKR) surgeries in 150 days. Setting new standards in surgical precision and patient recovery, Apollo OMR races to be one of the fastest growing Robotic TKR centres in South India. The robotic technology used in these surgeries is Mako Smart Robotics, a product of Stryker, a medical technology company based in the USA. For patients with complex knee conditions, this next-gen technology is a minimally invasive and a safer alternative to traditional knee replacement surgery. The traditional total knee replacement (TKR) is a surgical procedure performed on patients with joint damage or advanced arthritis to relieve knee pain and restore joint function. It relies on manual alignment and standardised implant procedure. The damaged sections of the knee are replaced with artificial components, allowing better movement and quality of life. In contrast, Robotic Total Knee Replacements uses 3D imaging and computer-guided tools to plan and execute the procedure with precision. This opens avenues for surgeons to navigate every step to the patient’s unique anatomy, thereby minimising tissue trauma, blood loss and enhancing implant longevity. A team of Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons – Dr. Venkataramanan Swaminathan, Dr. Damodharan P R, Dr. Senthil Kamalasekaran and Dr. Madhan Thiruvengada, alongside their teams, made this milestone possible. Talking about the technology used for robotic surgeries, Dr. Venkataramanan Swaminathan, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, OMR said, “The robotic assisted total knee replacement is not just a technological upgrade but a game changer in orthopaedic care. With robotic-arm assisted technology, we are able to treat patients with cases that were considered complex for conventional surgery. With a growing ageing population, this technology promises reduced pain, faster recovery, improved mobility and quality of life.” Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, Chief Executive Officer, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai Region said, "Completing 150 robotic knee replacements in just 150 days is a clinical milestone as well as a reflection of our commitment to innovation and patient-first care. At Apollo OMR, we are committed to integrating next-gen technologies like Robotic Total Knee Replacements to deliver precision care and match patient expectations. We consistently aim to stay ahead by combining clinical excellence with innovation, resulting in a better quality of life for our patients.” In conventional surgery, a patient’s walking and mobility begins in 2–4 days with total recovery ranging from 6 to 8 weeks. In contrast, with robotic assisted surgery, the patient can begin walking within 24 hours of the surgery with less or no post-operative pain and return to daily activities in less than 4 weeks. While the conventional surgery takes 3 hours, the robotic TKT takes less than 2 hours.

Tamil Nadu’s Largest Stroke Network: Apollo Hospitals Chennai Expands Stroke Care Across the City with 9 Advan...
~One in Four Adults Above 25 at Risk; Stroke Cases Rising Among Younger Populations~Chennai, 29 October 2025: Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, announced the expansion of its Apollo Advanced Stroke Network - a comprehensive, protocol-driven system designed to ensure rapid diagnosis and treatment for stroke patients across the city. With one in four individuals above 25 years of age now at risk, and stroke cases increasingly being reported among younger populations, this initiative comes at a crucial time to strengthen early detection and time-sensitive intervention in stroke care. This initiative marks a major leap forward in the fight against stroke - a condition where every minute counts. In stroke management, “Time is Brain”, as nearly 1,90,000 brain cells are lost every minute during an attack. The network ensures that patients across Apollo’s hospitals in Chennai receive uniform, high-quality, and time-sensitive care for both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. This milestone follows Apollo Hospitals’ Stroke Network launch in 2023, which laid the foundation for coordinated stroke response and public awareness initiatives. The expansion aims to reach a wider population, strengthen early detection, and improve survival and recovery rates.Globally, nearly 13 million people suffer a stroke each year, and in Chennai alone, around 10,000 cases are reported annually - underscoring the urgent need for awareness, preparedness, and timely medical response. The Apollo Advanced Stroke Network unites some of Chennai’s leading experts in neurology and neurovascular care, including Dr. Srinivasan Paramasivam, Senior Consultant – Neuro Endovascular Surgery; Dr. Kannah, Dr. Vijay Shankar, Dr. Muthukani, Dr. Arulselvan, and Dr. Satish Kumar, Dr. Sreenivas UM and all Senior Consultants in Neurology. Together, this multidisciplinary team brings extensive experience and expertise in stroke management, ensuring comprehensive and coordinated care for patients across the Apollo Hospitals network in Chennai.Dr. Srinivasan Paramasivam, Head of Neuro Endovascular Surgery at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Lane, Chennai, said “The Apollo Advanced Stroke Network represents an organized and time-efficient response system to expedite advanced care for stroke patients. Our focus is on offering neuroendovascular treatments such as mechanical thrombectomy for ischemic stroke, and endovascular and microsurgical treatments for hemorrhagic stroke. The goal is simple — to save more lives and improve outcomes through faster, smarter intervention.”Dr. Satish Kumar, Senior Consultant, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, OMR, added, “The emerging stroke treatments that we see today are time-dependent. We presently have 4.5 hours as the recognized time limit to initiate an intravenous thrombolysis in an indicated patient. Any sudden neurological development should be considered as a warning sign of stroke. Symptoms such as sudden vision loss, facial drooping, sudden weakness or numbness of one sided arm/leg, speech disturbances and instability are key to understanding the condition. Awareness about stroke, the importance of time in stoke management and stroke prevention methods are abysmally low in our community. "Every minutes counts in stroke". We are pleased to join hands with stroke survivors to help create more awareness around this critical concern.”Dr. Sreenivas UM, Consultant Neurologist , Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Vanagaram spoke about the importance of AI in Acute Stroke Treatment. He said, “Artificial Intelligence is transforming the way we approach acute stroke care. Time is the most critical factor in stroke management, and AI-powered imaging and decision-support tools are helping us identify strokes faster and initiate treatment with unprecedented precision.”Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, Chief Executive Officer – Chennai Region, Apollo Hospitals, said, “Apollo Hospitals is delighted to launch the Apollo Advanced Stroke Network to respond to the needs of those with specific neurological conditions. We at Apollo appreciate that every minute counts and our stroke response model is designed on that principle. We also hope that the journeys of the survivors will enlighten and inspire stakeholders elsewhere to collaborate and fashion stroke care models that will greatly benefit their communities.”With this initiative, Apollo Hospitals Chennai continues to lead in advanced neuroscience and emergency care, offering a continuum of stroke management - from emergency intervention to rehabilitation and community education. The hospital remains deeply committed to public awareness, early prevention, and ensuring that no stroke goes untreated due to delay or lack of access.

The clinical decision-making begins months before the procedure. Our goal is to align clinical judgment with technology, so that each patient receives the most appropriate and thoughtful therapy possible. DBS is far more than a surgical procedure; it is a continuum of care. Its success depends not only on precise implantation, but on expert, individualised programming tailored to each patient’s symptom profile, translating stimulation into meaningful and sustained improvement. Our aim is to give patients back their movement, their confidence, and ultimately, their life.”Highlighting the exacting standards required for DBS surgery, Dr. Arvind Sukumaran, Senior Consultant Functional Neurosurgeon, Apollo Children’s Hospitals, Chennai said, “DBS placement is never target practice of just about “hitting the nucleus”. It involves understanding each patient’s functional anatomy, the link between every contact and clinical effect, and refusing to compromise on any aspect of technique or safety. Training across high-volume international centres gives us the bandwidth to integrate the latest technology where it truly matters, while keeping the fundamentals uncompromised. The principle is simple: get it right, every time, with safety at the core.”Apollo Hospitals Greams Lane’s commitment to early adoption of advanced technologies is evident through the team having performed India’s first Medtronic BrainSense™ DBS surgery, which incorporates real-time neural sensing and adaptive stimulation. This milestone demonstrates the centre’s dedication to using evidence-based technology to refine and improve long-term patient outcomes. The comprehensive DBS pathway at Apollo Hospitals Greams Lane includes advanced neuroimaging, electrophysiological mapping, individualised surgical planning, protocol-driven implantation, and long-term follow-up with expert programming, ensuring that every step meets uncompromised standards of precision and safety. For individuals living with advanced Parkinson’s disease, DBS provides the possibility of restored mobility, stability, and independence.
