Apollo Hospitals Chennai Achieves Tamil Nadu’s First Leadless Dual Chamber AVEIR Pacemaker Implantation
Chennai, 22 October, 2025: Apollo Hospitals, Greams Lane, Chennai, has another remarkable milestone in advanced cardiac care with the successful implantation of Tamil Nadu’s first Leadless Dual Chamber AVEIR Pacemaker. The complex procedure was performed by Dr. Karthigesan A. M., Senior Consultant Cardiologist & Electrophysiologist, and his expert cardiac team. The recipient was an 80-year-old male patient with hypertension, diabetes, a prior history of angioplasty, and chronic kidney disease on dialysis. He presented with a slow heart rate and recurrent loss of consciousness caused by age-related complete heart block. Given his high risk of infection with conventional pacemakers, the team opted for the innovative leadless pacemaker system a safer and more advanced alternative for such patients. The AVEIR dual chamber pacemaker represents the next generation of cardiac pacing technology. Unlike conventional pacemakers that require leads and a surgical pocket, this leadless system is implanted directly into the heart chambers through a minimally invasive catheter-based technique. This approach eliminates the need for open surgery and reduces This cutting-edge device offers several advantages over traditional systems. The femoral vein approach allows for faster recovery and leaves no visible scar, while the absence of leads and a surgical pocket minimizes complications such as bleeding and infection. Its compact design enhances patient comfort, cosmetic outcomes, and long-term safety, while the wireless communication between the right atrium and ventricle enables synchronized, physiologic pacing that closely mimics the heart’s natural rhythm. The AVEIR system also integrates miniaturization, remote monitoring, and precision pacing, ensuring superior clinical outcomes and an improved quality of life. Dr. Karthigesan A. M., Senior Consultant Cardiologist & Electrophysiologist, Apollo Hospitals, Greams lane, Chennai said, “the introduction of the AVEIR dual chamber leadless pacemaker marks a transformative step in cardiac rhythm management and a major milestone for Indian cardiology and Apollo Hospitals, Greams Lane, Chennai. This groundbreaking technology offers the precision of physiologic pacing while eliminating the traditional risks associated with leads and surgical pockets. We call it an ‘extraordinary leap for healthcare’ because it is compact, intelligent, and designed with the patient’s comfort and experience in mind. This advancement enables us to deliver safer, more comfortable, and longer-lasting cardiac care, and it has the potential to revolutionize the way pacemaker systems are used in the future.” Dr Ilankumaran kaliamoorthy, CEO, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai Region quoted, “At Apollo Hospitals, we are committed to adopting cutting-edge technologies that redefine patient care standards. The successful introduction of the AVEIR leadless pacemaker reinforces our focus on clinical excellence, innovation, and superior outcomes for our patients. This milestone strengthens our mission to bring world-class cardiac care within everyone’s reach.” Apollo Hospitals continues to lead the nation in cardiac innovation and excellence, integrating the latest medical technologies to enhance precision, safety, and patient comfort. In stroke management, “Time is Brain”, as nearly 1,90,000 brain cells are lost every minute during an attack. The network ensures that patients across Apollo’s hospitals in Chennai receive uniform, high-quality, and time-sensitive care for both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. This milestone follows Apollo Hospitals’ Stroke Network launch in 2023, which laid the foundation for coordinated stroke response and public awareness initiatives. The expansion aims to reach a wider population, strengthen early detection, and improve survival and recovery rates.Globally, nearly 13 million people suffer a stroke each year, and in Chennai alone, around 10,000 cases are reported annually - underscoring the urgent need for awareness, preparedness, and timely medical response. The Apollo Advanced Stroke Network unites some of Chennai’s leading experts in neurology and neurovascular care, including Dr. Srinivasan Paramasivam, Senior Consultant – Neuro Endovascular Surgery; Dr. Kannah, Dr. Vijay Shankar, Dr. Muthukani, Dr. Arulselvan, and Dr. Satish Kumar, Dr. Sreenivas UM and all Senior Consultants in Neurology. Together, this multidisciplinary team brings extensive experience and expertise in stroke management, ensuring comprehensive and coordinated care for patients across the Apollo Hospitals network in Chennai.Dr. Srinivasan Paramasivam, Head of Neuro Endovascular Surgery at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Lane, Chennai, said “The Apollo Advanced Stroke Network represents an organized and time-efficient response system to expedite advanced care for stroke patients. Symptoms such as sudden vision loss, facial drooping, sudden weakness or numbness of one sided arm/leg, speech disturbances and instability are key to understanding the condition. Awareness about stroke, the importance of time in stoke management and stroke prevention methods are abysmally low in our community. "Every minutes counts in stroke". We are pleased to join hands with stroke survivors to help create more awareness around this critical concern.”Dr. Sreenivas UM, Consultant Neurologist , Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Vanagaram spoke about the importance of AI in Acute Stroke Treatment. In India, breast and ovarian cancers are among the most common hereditary cancers, with up to 10% linked to BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Lynch syndrome, another inherited condition, is responsible for 2–3% of colorectal cancers, underscoring the importance of awareness and early intervention. At Apollo Cancer Centre, Chennai, a recent case of familial clustering demonstrated the power of timely diagnosis and treatment. Four members of a family from Guwahati—the mother, her two daughters, and her son—were diagnosed with cancers linked to Lynch syndrome. All four received treatment at Apollo and are now doing well, underscoring the life-changing impact of genetic awareness and multidisciplinary care. Dr. Venkat P, Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, Chennai, stated, “Cancer is not always sporadic; it can be inherited across generations. Genetic counselling and proactive screening are crucial to detect risk early and improve survival outcomes.”Dr. Priya Kapoor, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, Chennai, highlighted, “Families with multiple cases of colorectal, ovarian, or endometrial cancers must take their medical history seriously. Genetic testing, structured surveillance, regular colonoscopies, timely polyp removal, and preventive surgeries can help stop cancers before they develop fully.” Even the patients from Guwahati said: “When cancer struck four of us in our family, it felt devastating. But Apollo’s doctors guided us with care and compassion. Today, we carry hope instead of fear.” Reinforcing this vision, Mr. Harshad Reddy, Director – Group Oncology & International, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd, said, “Families might not realize that cancer may run in their genes until several loved ones are affected. At Apollo Cancer Centre, we are committed to bridging this gap through awareness, education, and proactive genetic care—because early action can change the course of a family’s future.” Apollo Cancer Centre continues to lead India’s fight against hereditary cancers by raising awareness, driving prevention efforts, and instilling hope.

Central obesity was also found in 10% of participants, underscoring the early onset of lifestyle-related risks such as poor diet and stress. Through Catch ’Em Young, students will undergo comprehensive screenings that include BMI, waist circumference, hemoglobin, HbA1c, blood pressure, and triglycerides. The program seeks to build health awareness on campuses and promote preventive lifestyle choices. Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO of Apollo Hospitals Chennai, noted that NCDs are no longer confined to middle age but are increasingly affecting college students.
