Apollo Hospitals Chennai launches India’s first Robotics & Telesurgery Program

~ New initiative focused on advancing robotic surgery, digital surgery and remote surgical collaboration ~Chennai, 13 March 2026: Apollo Hospitals Chennai has launched the Apollo Institute of Robotics & Telesurgery (ART), a new initiative aimed at advancing robotic surgery, digital surgery and remote surgical collaboration. The announcement was made during the 6th Apollo International Colorectal Symposium (AICRS) 2026, which brought together leading surgeons, scientists and technology pioneers from across the world to discuss the future of colorectal cancer surgery and technology-enabled care. The symposium highlighted the rapid evolution of technology-driven colorectal care, with discussions focused on robotic surgery, digital surgical platforms and emerging telesurgical innovations that are transforming surgical access and outcomes globally. A major highlight presented during the symposium was the Apollo Rectal Cancer (ARC) Programme at the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, Chennai a comprehensive multidisciplinary initiative designed for the management of complex rectal cancers. The programme integrates colorectal surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, specialist nurses, nutritionists and rehabilitation experts to deliver coordinated, patient-centred cancer care.  Another milestone highlighted was the growing adoption of robotic colorectal surgery at Apollo Hospitals. Dr. Venkatesh Munikrishnan and his team have completed over 1,000 robotic colorectal procedures, including one of the largest personal series of robotic rectal cancer resections in the region. This experience has helped position Apollo Hospitals Chennai as a subspecialist centre for rectal cancer treatment and an important training hub for advanced robotic colorectal surgery, attracting surgeons and fellows from across India and internationally. Speaking about the initiative, Prof Dr Venkatesh Munikrishnan, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon & Clinical Lead Institute of Colorectal Surgery and Chairperson AICRS 2026 said, “Rectal cancer treatment today requires a highly coordinated multidisciplinary approach. The Apollo Rectal Cancer Programme was developed to ensure patients benefit from the combined expertise of surgeons, oncologists and allied specialists working together to deliver personalised, evidence-based care. The integration of technologies such as robotic surgery has significantly enhanced surgical precision, particularly in complex pelvic procedures, improving outcomes while preserving quality of life.” Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Founder Chairman and CEO, SS Innovations, said, “Robotic surgery has already transformed how complex operations are performed by enabling greater precision, control and visualisation for surgeons. The next natural progression is telesurgery, which will redefine how surgical expertise is delivered across geographies. Technologies such as the Mantrasana telesurgery platform are designed to bridge the gap between centres of excellence and hospitals that may not have access to subspecialist expertise, ensuring that patients, regardless of location, can benefit from the highest standards of surgical care.”Looking ahead to the next phase of surgical innovation, Apollo Hospitals announced the launch of the Apollo Institute of Robotics and Telesurgery (ART), a new initiative aimed at advancing robotic surgery, digital surgery and remote surgical collaboration. Present at the launch were Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, Chief Executive Officer - Chennai Region, Apollo Hospitals and Mr. Karan Puri, Chief Executive Officer - Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Teynampet & Apollo Proton Cancer Centre. Co-chaired by Prof Dr Steven D Wexner, System Chief, Colorectal Surgery, Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, Washington DC, USA and Prof. Manish Chand, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon & Associate Professor, University College London, UK and hosted by the Institute of Colorectal Surgery at Apollo Hospitals Chennai, AICRS 2026 reflects a decade-long effort to advance subspecialisation in colorectal surgery, transforming what was once a general surgical field into a highly specialised discipline driven by precision, technology and multidisciplinary cancer care.Click here to know more.

Doctors at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai Successfully Performs Robotic Hysterectomy on Patient with Rare Bleeding Disorder

A multidisciplinary team at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, has successfully performed a robotic hysterectomy on a 37-year-old woman diagnosed with Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia, a rare genetic condition that severely impairs the blood’s ability to clot and can lead to life-threatening bleeding episodes.    L to R: Dr. Punit Jain - Sr Consultant Hematology, Hemato Oncology & Program Coordinator Bone Marrow Transplant & CAR T-cell Therapy, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, Mrs. Neelam Yadav (Patient), Dr. Tripti Dubey - Sr Consultant Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Robotic Surgery, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, and Mr. Sudhir Yadav (Patient's husband). The patient had endured years of severe menstrual bleeding that often required hospitalisation and blood transfusions. During a recent episode, her haemoglobin level dropped to a critically low 4 g/dL, prompting doctors to recommend a hysterectomy as a definitive solution to prevent recurrent bleeding and improve her long-term quality of life. Doctors also noted that the woman had previously delivered a child through a Caesarean section and required multiple blood and platelet transfusions at the time due to complications related to her underlying bleeding disorder. Surgery in patients with Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia is particularly complex due to the risk of uncontrolled bleeding, even from minor surgical interventions. To mitigate these risks, the clinical team opted for a robotic assisted minimally invasive procedure. The surgery was led by Dr. Tripti Dubey (Senior Consultant – Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Robotic Surgery, Apollo Hospitals) in collaboration with Dr. Punit Jain (Consultant – Haematology, Hemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist, Apollo Hospitals), combining expertise in robotic gynaecology and haematology to carefully manage the patient’s clotting disorder. The surgery was completed with near-zero intraoperative blood loss and without the need for transfusion during the procedure — a remarkable achievement given the patient’s underlying condition. Following a monitored postoperative recovery, the patient stabilised well and was able to resume routine activities soon afterward. This case underscores the growing role of robotic surgery in managing complex, high-risk conditions. By enabling enhanced precision, smaller incisions, and improved control during delicate procedures, robotic platforms are helping clinicians expand the boundaries of safe surgical care for patients with rare and challenging disorders.

29-Year-Old With Rare Tracheal(Windpipe) Tumor Treated Successfully
29 year old man undergoes successful surgery for rare tracheal (windpipe) tumor at Indraprastha Apollo HospitalsPatient presented with breathlessness, chest discomfort with SPO2 of 70%The tumor had blocked the wind pipe causing a life-threatening situation19th December, 2022, New Delhi: In a rare case, a 29 year old man was successfully operated for a tumor in his windpipe, at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. Initially, the patient had complained of chest pain and progressive swelling in his neck. After suffering for over 2 months he consulted a local doctor who diagnosed him with Tuberculosis, but his condition did not improve with TB medication. As next steps he underwent bronchoscopy that revealed a large mass in his windpipe causing 80% blockage. With his condition deteriorating due to acute breathlessness and fluctuating oxygen levels he was admitted to a local hospital of Faridabad. With no respite in his condition he was referred to Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi where he was admitted under the supervision of Dr Nikhil Modi, Senior Consultant, Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. Here he was immediately put on ventilator to first stabilise his oxygen level, however when further examined by Dr Suresh Singh Naruka, Senior Consultant, ENT and Head and Neck Surgeon, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi for his tumour, he was recommended an immediate tumor removal surgery.Speaking on the same, Dr Nikhil Modi, Senior Consultant, Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi said, “Early and correct diagnosis has the best opportunity for a positive heath outcome. Sometimes, with patient getting delayed medical care the condition can become life-threatening. Same was the case with this 29 year old man from Uttar Pradesh, due to delay in treatment & wrong diagnosis, the tumor increased in size and caused nearly complete blockage of the wind pipe. With his condition deteriorating he was admitted on 29th October, 2022 at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. To maintain his airway he underwent urgent tracheostomy and bronchoscopy followed by tumor removal surgery.”Dr Suresh Singh Naruka, Senior Consultant, ENT and Head and Neck Surgeon, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi said, “When this patient was admitted to Apollo he had developed a tumour which was causing 80% blockage of the neck. Hence after stabilising his oxygen levels an immediate surgery was carried out in order to maintain the airway. This surgery in particular was challenging. Due to the size of the tumour, there was no space for air to pass into the lungs and patient saturation rate was dropping very fast whenever we were doing any instrumentation. The procedure took 3 hours but were able to successfully remove the tumour. Postoperatively the patient was kept in ICU for further monitoring and as he was successfully weaned off from mechanical ventilation, he was discharged on 9th November, 2022. Post- surgery, the biopsy of wind pipe mass revealed a cancer of lymphoid cells known as Lymphoma. Lymphoma is extremely rare to find in wind pipe as it comprises only 0.2% to 0.3% of all wind pipe tumors. Basis the presence of lymphoma he is undergoing chemotherapy as further management and is keeping well now.”The patient is still visiting the hospital for follow-ups and management of Lymphoma through chemotherapy.

India on the brink of a cardiovascular disaster and needs urgent measures to control BP levels
Hyderabad, May 16th, 2017: World Hypertension Day (WHD) is observed on 17th of May every year to raise awareness on Hypertension and World Hypertension League (WHL) ensures its observation world over. The theme of WHD is ‘Know Your Numbers’ with an aim to increase awareness on high blood pressure. The theme being pertinent considering that only 50% of those with hypertension are aware of their condition. In certain communities the awareness is as dismally low as 10%. Of those who are diagnosed, less than half are treated and only a small percentage achieve normal BP levels. WHD is to raise the awareness levels and make individuals conscious about hypertension and the necessary precautions. Incidentally, the South Asia Regional Office of World Hypertension League is located in Hyderabad at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills.incidence as high as 36% amongst adults in urban areas & 30% of the adults in the rural areas being responsible for 1.1 million deaths annually, accounting for nearly 11% of all deaths in India afflicting ‘growing’ number of children and youngHigh BP can cause heart attacks, heart failure, stroke-paralysis, loss of memory, and kidney failure. If these complications occurs, life becomes miserable—frequent visits to the doctor, frequent hospitalizations, chronic illness, surgery, stents, dialysis, loss of productivity, and deprivation of life. Fortunately, one can diagnose high BP easily, get treated in order to remain healthy. If the diagnosis is doubtful, one can undergo 24 hr BP recordings with an automatic device—to confirm or exclude the diagnosis. Every adult should know their BP number—like knowing one’s name, age, weight, height, YOU MUST KNOW YOUR NUMBERS. Get the BP checked. Otherwise, you are gambling with life. All individuals should have a BP less than 140/90; those with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease should have a BP less than 135/85. BPs greater than 140/90 will cause irreparable damage, as it is the No.1 cause of heart disease, stroke, paralysis and dementia in our country, and the patient can become a huge social/financial burden for the family. To live long and free of disease, one needs to keep the BP normal always—24 hours a day. No exceptions, he says.National studies have shown that nearly 30-35% of adults in Hyderabad and Telangana have high BP levels. But sadly, only less than 10% know that they have high BP. Unless we control high BP in Hyderabad and in our state, danger is looming, a Tsunami is heading our way. All this suffering can be avoided through awareness, early diagnosis, and correct management of high BP. People should be aware that unless checked, they may be in the dark. GET THE BP CHECKED. And be treated. Costs including financial/social/societal of untreated high BP are astronomical. According to estimates the annual cost of medical care of patients with hypertension related disease in India is $20 billion. Vascular surgery, heart surgery, dialysis, transplantation, and stroke rehabilitation are very expensive. So, be smart and prevent these complications by keeping your BP normal. With life-style changes, dietary caution, and medicines, it is possible to lower your BP. But if the BP is neglected or not treated early on, it is tough to get it under control. So, the key is awareness, early diagnosis, and early treatment. Waiting is harmful. BP will not evaporate, it stays and gets worse.Mind you, BP has to be treated indefinitely. If you are on the medicine, you have to take it indefinitely and not cyclically. BP medicines are not like antibiotics, you should not stop the medicines unless advised by the doctors. Patients assume that the treatment is only for few days and then, they stop. No, BP treatment is not seasonal or as you wish. You must remain on treatment unless there is a reason and that too only under medical supervision. Don’t take life in your hands; don’t go through the red signal of high BP. Go through when the signal becomes green, which is normal BP.In some patients, the high BP could be because of “secondary” hypertension, like Thyroid gland disease, adrenal gland problems, blockage of circulation to the kidney, certain kidney ailments. Heavy snoring/ sleep apnea can cause very high BP and the remedy is to treat the snoring disorder. BP problems in pregnancy can be extremely dangerous for the mother and the fetus. Excessive alcohol use or pain relievers can cause high BP. Patients with secondary hypertension can be cured or improved by correcting the underlying cause. The doctors can suspect a secondary cause and if it is fixed, BP will become normal. It also manifests differently in different people, in some the blood pressure goes up only in the doctor’s office or hospital, but is normal outside (at home or work), this is called “white coat hypertension.” Nervous individuals, and “tense” people may have white coat hypertension. In some others, the blood pressure is normal in the doctor’s clinic or hospital but is high outside (at home or work). This is called “reverse” white coat hypertension or “masked” hypertension. We can diagnose these abnormal condition by measuring 24 hr blood pressure (at home or work) with an automatic machine.Unfortunately, high BP is striking young individuals in our city, the condition is turning alarming and a cause for great concern. If we don’t take care of this immediately, the young are at a risk of stroke/paralysis, heart attack, and kidney failure. BP should be checked even in the young at schools, colleges, work place, IT industry, etc. The trend of high BP in the young is extremely serious and requires urgent attention.Apollo hospital’s BP clinic and BP institute specialize in hypertension where proper testing , monitoring, and treatment facilities are available through dedicated staff—specializing in hypertension, a one of its kind Clinic in Asia. At Apollo, we can even measure the blood pressure in the heart (non-invasively) and it is one of the best ways to know if you really have high blood pressure. In some people high blood pressure may be due to a cause in the body called “secondary” hypertension. Certain endocrine gland diseases, blockage of circulation to the kidney, and kidney problems can cause “secondary” hypertension which can be cured by correcting the underlying cause. We have many patients in whom the blood pressure was “cured” by correcting/rectifying the underlying cause. Evaluation for “secondary” hypertension is very critical in young individuals with hypertension. Don’t forget the correct “work-up.” By choosing appropriate treatment, blood pressure can be made normal. Choosing the right drugs is the key to successful control of hypertension. Here are actual examples of few patients seen last week at Apollo in whom the blood pressure was very high but could be controlled and made normal by proper and precise use of blood pressure lowering medicines.Patient Age Blood pressure before treatment Blood pressure after correct treatmentThe moral is—know your BP number, like knowing your weight and height. KNOW YOUR BP number—like knowing your age. No excuse. Healthy individual contributes to a healthy family which contributes to a healthy society which contributes to healthy nation. Without a healthy nation, GDP or growth rate become irrelevant.

Often such neglect and sacrifices reflect at a later stage leading to chronic ailments as they get old.The campaign kick starts with a three day art exhibition with works of Artist Kant Risa on the theme Mother & Child, on display at Apollo Hospitals. The guests and visitors at the well attended launch program were presented with greeting cards with the imprints of the paintings to pen affectionate messages for their mothers. The launch will be followed by a sustained campaign to further the cause and reach the message to a cross section of the society. Medical Miracles of Apollo Delhi
Patient from Kenya treated for a rare complication after surgery for GERDPatient from Kenya treated for a rare complication after surgery for GERD A 56 year male from Kenya had severe symptoms of heartburn for many years and was unresponsive to medications. After a detailed evaluation he was diagnosed to have Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with a hiatus hernia. He underwent surgery in the form of fundoplication (wrapping of part of the stomach around the lower esophagus) in his home country. However soon after surgery he developed severe difficulty in swallowing both solids and liquids (dysphagia). Two more surgeries were done within a span of 6 months with the aim of relieving the symptoms but unfortunately after each surgery the symptoms only worsened. His discomfort progressed to a stage where after every meal he would have a feeling of the ingested food being stuck in the chest and upper abdomen. This would progress to severe discomfort and be relieved after vomiting. This symptom has resulted in a fear of eating and significant weight loss.At this stage he came to IAH and a detailed evaluation was done which included endoscopy and CT scans of the chest and abdomen. These revealed that subsequent to the prior surgical procedures most of his stomach was lying in the chest cavity instead of its normal position in the abdominal cavity. This was also resulting in a marked angulation of the stomach because of which ingested food was not freely passing into the intestine causing his symptoms of severe discomfort and vomiting after ingestion of food. Since he had undergone multiple previous surgeries, he was advised open surgery instead of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. At the time of surgery both his chest and abdominal cavities were required to be opened to allow proper access. The stomach was straightened and pulled down to its normal position to allow ingested food to pass down to the intestine normally. His post-operative recovery after the complex surgery was uneventful and he has since then returned to his country.Total Femoral Prosthesis, An Extremely Uncommon Surgery Performed By Dr Raju Vaishya.Successful salvage of a severely crushed leg and ankleA 30 year old male from Oman, presented following a Road traffic accident on 8/07/2022. He had sustained a severe, crush injury of left leg and foot, for which was initially managed in his country, but as his limb condition worsened, he was referred to Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. He was advised amputation in view of h poor limb condition and significant bone loss of about 3 inches. The extensive soft tissue damage was managed by the plastic surgery team of Dr Rajesh Watts. The limb salvage procedures were done, in the form of wound debridement, external fixation of the fractures, free flap cover of the wound, limb lengthening, and finally the hindfoot arthrodesis was done on 31/01/2023, by Dr. (Prof.) Raju Vaishya’s team. All the wounds of his leg and foot have now healed, the leg and foot deformities are corrected. The leg has also been lengthened by 3 inches using Ilizarov’s fixator. He is now able to walk pain free with crutches and is extremely happy, to have his native leg and foot.Successful Liver transplant saves the life of 45 year old man.Successful Liver transplant saves the life of 45-year-old manIn this case, the patient was a case of chronic liver ailments and had been suffering from jaundice. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Jeevandan along with Apollo Hospitals Spread awareness on Organ Donation
In India the burden of end organ disease is steadily on the rise. Transplantation of Liver, kidney, heart, Lungs, pancreas and intestines has become the standard of care for the treatment of the respective organ failures. The surgical procedure and post-surgery care has been standardized to a great extent and organ transplantation has success rates of 90-95% across all organ types. However, inspite of the good outcomes, transplantation is done in less than 5% of all patients who need it, the biggest hurdle being availability of suitable organs for transplantation.  Organs for transplantation have to come from humans and presently, the majority of transplantation in our country are being done using live donor organs (from people who are alive). One of the kidneys and a part of the liver can be donated by a healthy person. Live donation, in addition to putting the donor at risk of complications (however small the risk may be), also makes transplantation of heart, lung and pancreas impossible as these organs cannot be donated by living persons. Donation after death is the only effective solution to this problem as it can provide all organs for transplantation in addition to safeguarding concerns about live donor safety.Organ Requirement in IndiaEvery year 500,000 people die because of non-availability of organs200,000 people die of liver disease50,000 people die from heart disease150,000 people await a kidney transplant but only 5,000 get one1,000,000 lakh people suffer from corneal blindness and await transplantNationally, with a population of 1.2 billion people, the statistic stands at 0.08 persons as organ donors per million population (PMP)The Number of DonorsWhile 36 persons per million of population donated organs in Spain in 2014, 35 donated in Croatia, 27.02 donated in the United States, and only 0.34 donated inEach person can save up to 7 lives by donating their organsTypes of Organ Donation Live Donation Donation after brain Death (DBD or Heart beating Donors) Donation after Cardiac Death (DCD or Non Heart Beating Donors)Donor status Alive Dead DeadOrgans commonly donated Part of Liver,One KidneyLiver, both kidneys, pancreas, Intestines, Heart, Lungs Liver, both kidneysRisk to Donor (mortality) 1 in 500 for liver donation1 in 650 for kidney donationNone NoneTissue donation Usually not done Corneas (eye), Heart valves, skin, bones, vascularized composite tissues (i.e., hands, face) Corneas (eye), Heart valves, skin, bones,Legal Aspects Governed by THOA (Transplantation of Human Organs Act) Governed by THOA No clear guidelines presentlyOrgan Donation AwarenessPresently, about 600 organ donations happen every year in our country, which is a significant progress from the rare 1-2 per year about half a decade ago. This has been possible due to the facilitatory role of the government bodies and sustained effort from NGOs and medical community. Any concerns about the organs being distributed preferentially or unjustifiably has been addressed and all cadaveric organ donations and organ distributions are done directly by government bodies (NNOS in Tamil Nadu, Jeevandan in Telangana and AP, ZTCC in Maharashtra, ZCCK in Karnataka etc.) National and Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO and ROTTO) have been structured to facilitate organ sharing between different states so that donated organs are not wasted and made available to patients who desperately need them.Organ Donation a life changing trendThere is a huge discrepancy between the number of organs available for transplantation and the people who need them as life-saving procedures. The need of the hour is to educate the people about organ donation and the tremendous difference it can make to the life of patients with organ failure.Transplant recipients, who are incapacitated, totally dependent, and a financial burden to their families, go back to their normal life and become the breadwinners for their families.Women have successfully borne children after transplantation.Children who underwent transplant have returned to their normal school and play as the twinkle and gleam of dreams and immense possibilities return back to themOrgan donation is a GIFT of LIFE, not only for the patient who receives is but also his/her near and dear.Apollo Hospitals Transplant Institutes (ATI)The Apollo Transplant Institutes (ATI) is one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive solid transplant programs. Over the years several challenges have been overcome – transplants in small babies weighing as little as 4 kgs, transplants in babies and children with serious medical conditions other than liver failure, ABO incompatible transplants when the family does not have a blood group compatible donor. We are so happy that our 500th patient is a baby girl and nearly 45% of our patients are now girls. Our dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and support staff have worked tirelessly to provide the highest level of care and support to our patients and their families. A teacher husband and homemaker wife, they made a simplistic, humble, undemanding couple looking forward to their journey as parents. The first few weeks were blissful but then they realized Prisha contracted jaundiced. An arduous trail from one doctor to another led to complete despair and anguish when they were told she had a disease that was a death sentence, biliary atresia that would cause her liver to fail. They weren’t ready to give up and stepped beyond their humble reach to contact top specialists till they realized that a liver transplant would be lifesaving, and brought her to Apollo at about 6 months of age. Family and friends had tried to discourage them. The challenges were indeed multiple but were overcome by the family’s resolve and treating team’s commitment. A feeding tube was put in through her nose to supplement feeds and achieve nutritional rehabilitation while funds preparations were being made. Her mother donated a part of her liver and Prisha recovered beautifully after a successful liver transplant.
