Apollo SHINE Foundation, the not-for-profit arm of Apollo Hospitals, has launched Catch’ Em Young, a nationwide initiative to screen one lakh college students for early signs of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The program, inaugurated at Women’s Christian College, Chennai, is India’s largest health initiative of its kind, targeting young adults. The launch was attended by Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister Thiru Govi Chezhiaan and Thousand Lights constituency MLA Dr. Ezhilan Naganathan, who emphasized the importance of integrating preventive healthcare within higher education. Dr. Ezhilan Naganathan remarked that examining the screening results felt “like watching a horror movie,” but stressed that this “essential fear” is needed to drive proactive health behaviours and prevent illness later in life. Thiru Govi Chezhiaan highlighted that the findings highlight a worrying deficiency in awareness about non-communicable diseases across the state. He urged that the screening initiative should be expanded beyond Chennai to cover rural and other districts as well.   The initiative follows a decade of health screenings conducted by the foundation, which revealed alarming trends: 42% of students were overweight or obese, 4.5% had high blood pressure, 2.2% had increased blood sugar levels, 10% showed high triglyceride levels, and 30% were anaemic. Central obesity was also found in 10% of participants, underscoring the early onset of lifestyle-related risks such as poor diet and stress.   Through Catch ’Em Young, students will undergo comprehensive screenings that include BMI, waist circumference, hemoglobin, HbA1c, blood pressure, and triglycerides. The program seeks to build health awareness on campuses and promote preventive lifestyle choices. Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO of Apollo Hospitals Chennai, noted that NCDs are no longer confined to middle age but are increasingly affecting college students. Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, has reached a milestone with India’s first successful implantation of the Edwards SAPIEN 3 Ultra RESILIA transcatheter aortic valve (TAVI). This advanced valve offers enhanced durability, improved resistance to calcification, and fewer repeat procedures, enhancing outcomes for patients with severe aortic stenosis. The procedure was led by Dr. G. Sengottuvelu, Senior Interventional Cardiologist and Head of Structural Interventions at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. The first recipient, a 70-year-old patient with severe calcific tricuspid aortic stenosis and a prior coronary stent, was considered high-risk for open-heart surgery. 21st February, 2020, Navi Mumbai: Mr Santosh Kanade, a 36 year-old resident of Beed, Maharashtra successfully underwent a heart transplant surgery at Apollo Hospitals. The heart was retrieved from a deceased donor.Mr. Santosh was diagnosed with a condition in which the heart’s ability to pump blood is decreased because the heart’s main pumping chamber, the left ventricle, is enlarged and weakened. This is clinical terms is called Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is. The patient, a father two young children has been experiencing extended breathlessness and had difficulty climbing stairs for over two years, before he was diagnosed with this condition. Despite repeated hospitalizations and treatment received in his hometown in Pune, Mr. Santosh’s condition deteriorated and was further advised to consult the Heart Failure Clinic at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai.Dr. Sanjeev Jadhav, Consultant, CVTS & Heart Transplant Surgery, Apollo Hospitals,the chief expert in this case said “Dilated cardiomyopathy is the most common form of cardiomyopathy. In this particular case, it was found that the patient’s heart was functioning at 17% and he was in urgent need of a Heart Transplant. The donor was a 41 year-old woman, with the same blood group as the patient, who had been declared brain-dead (cadaver donor) after a road traffic accident. The heart transplant surgery was completed within 60 minutes, after which the patient was shifted to the ICU.
