What is LEEP

Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) is a safe and effective outpatient procedure used to remove abnormal or pre-cancerous cells from the cervix (the lower, narrow end of the uterus that opens into the vagina). It is often recommended when a Pap smear reveals CIN (Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia), which are changes in cervical cells that could progress to cancer over time.

LEEP is both diagnostic and therapeutic. It removes the abnormal tissue and allows for further examination under a microscope to confirm the extent and severity of the changes. It is recommended for CIN 2 or CIN 3 (moderate to severe dysplasia), persistent HPV infection with abnormal Pap results and prior biopsy confirms pre-cancerous changes needing excision.

How the Procedure
is Performed
At Apollo Athenaa, every surgical step is carefully planned and performed by experienced surgeons with a focus on safety, precision, and recovery.

  • Local anesthesia is administered to numb the cervix.
  • The wire loop removes cells from the affected area.
  • Cauterization is used to control bleeding.
  • The entire procedure takes 10–15 minutes and is conducted in an outpatient setting.
  • The removed tissue is sent for histopathological evaluation to ensure the margins are clear of abnormal cells.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is LEEP?
01

LEEP is a minor procedure used to remove abnormal or pre-cancerous cells from the cervix using a thin wire loop heated by an electric current. It helps prevent cervical cancer by treating changes early.

Why is LEEP recommended?
02

LEEP is advised when Pap smear, HPV testing, or biopsy shows moderate to high-grade cervical cell changes that need treatment rather than observation.

Is LEEP painful?
03

LEEP is usually well tolerated. Local anesthesia is used, so you may feel mild pressure or cramping during the procedure, but significant pain is uncommon.

Will LEEP affect fertility or pregnancy?
04

LEEP generally preserves fertility. Most women go on to conceive normally. In rare cases, it may slightly increase the risk of preterm birth, which your doctor will discuss if relevant.

What is recovery like after LEEP?
05

Most women go home the same day and resume light activities within 24 hours. Mild cramping, spotting, or dark discharge is common for a few days. Sexual intercourse, tampons, and douching should be avoided for about 4 weeks.
