What is Chemoport

For patients undergoing long-term chemotherapy, repeated needle pricks can cause significant discomfort and damage to peripheral veins. A chemoport, or Totally Implantable Venous Access Device (TIVAD), provides a safe, durable, and reliable alternative. Once placed, it allows medications, fluids, and blood products to be administered directly into a central vein — with fewer complications and greater comfort.

At Apollo Athenaa, chemoport placement is a routine minor procedure that significantly improves the chemotherapy experience for patients who require frequent intravenous access.

How the Procedure
 is Performed
At Apollo Athenaa, every surgical step is carefully
planned and performed by experienced breast surgeons
with a focus on safety, precision, and recovery.

  • The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or light general anesthesia.
  • A small incision is made in the upper chest to create a pocket beneath the skin.
  • A catheter is inserted into a large central vein — usually the subclavian or internal jugular vein — under ultrasound guidance.
  • The catheter is connected to a small port (about the size of a coin), which is secured in the subcutaneous pocket.
  • The incisions are closed with absorbable sutures and covered with a sterile dressing.
  • The entire procedure takes about 30–60 minutes and is performed on a day-care basis.
  • The chemoport is usually placed on the same day as administration of chemotherapy, thereby avoiding a separate admission for the same.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a chemoport?
01

A chemoport is a small medical device placed under the skin, usually in the chest, that provides safe and reliable access to a vein for chemotherapy and other intravenous treatments.

Why is a chemoport recommended?
02

It reduces the need for repeated needle pricks, protects fragile veins, and makes long-term treatments like chemotherapy more comfortable and convenient.

How is a chemoport placed?
03

The port is inserted through a minor surgical procedure under local anesthesia or light sedation. It is positioned under the skin and connected to a vein, with no external tubes visible.

Is the procedure painful or risky?
04

Discomfort is usually minimal and temporary. Risks such as infection or blockage are low when the port is placed and maintained correctly. Your care team will provide instructions on port care.

How long can a chemoport stay in place?
05

A chemoport can remain in place for months or even years, as long as it is needed for treatment. It can be removed easily once therapy is completed.
