What is PIPAC

PIPAC is an innovative, minimally invasive treatment for patients with peritoneal metastases (cancers that have spread to the lining of the abdominal cavity). It is most commonly used in recurrent or chemo-resistant select gynecological cancers. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, which is delivered systemically, PIPAC administers chemotherapy directly to the affected area in the form of a pressurized aerosol mist, allowing for better distribution and tissue penetration.

PIPAC is not a curative procedure but serves as a palliative therapy aimed at symptom control, disease stabilization, and potentially improving quality of life in patients with advanced disease. At Apollo Athenaa, we ensure that women receive the best cancer treatment suited for their unique biology.

How the Procedure
is Performed
At Apollo Athenaa, every surgical step is carefully planned and performed by experienced surgeons with a focus on safety, precision, and recovery.

  • The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
  • Small incisions (cuts) are made for laparoscopic entry into the abdominal cavity.
  • A thorough visual assessment of the peritoneal cavity is done.
  • Biopsies may be taken to monitor disease status.
  • Chemotherapy is converted into a fine aerosol mist. It is delivered under pressure into the peritoneal cavity. The pressurization enhances drug penetration into tumor tissue.
  • The aerosol remains in the cavity for a fixed period (typically 30 minutes). The chemotherapy is then evacuated.
  • The ports are then removed, and incisions are closed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is PIPAC?
01

PIPAC is a minimally invasive chemotherapy technique where anticancer drugs are delivered as an aerosol directly into the abdominal cavity during laparoscopy. The pressure helps the drug penetrate tumor tissue more effectively.

Who is PIPAC recommended for?
02

PIPAC is offered to selected patients with cancers that have spread to the lining of the abdomen (peritoneal disease), especially when standard systemic treatments have limited benefit or are not well tolerated.

How is the PIPAC procedure performed?
03

PIPAC is done through keyhole surgery. Chemotherapy is aerosolized and delivered under pressure into the abdomen, left to act for a short period, and then safely evacuated before the procedure is completed.

What are the benefits of PIPAC?
04

PIPAC allows targeted treatment with minimal systemic side effects, can improve symptom control, and may help stabilize disease. It is repeatable and less taxing than extensive surgery.

What is recovery like after PIPAC?
05

Hospital stay is usually 1–2 days. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can resume normal activities within a few days. The procedure may be repeated every 6–8 weeks based on response and overall condition.
