Gynecological Cancer Care

Gynecological Cancer Care Preserving Health,
Fertility & Quality of Life.

Gynecological cancers affect a woman's health and well-being, but when detected early and treated by specialists, many can be successfully managed with personalized treatment that preserves quality of life.

Types Of Gynecological Cancer

Gynecological cancers are classified based on the organ in which they originate:

  • Arises from the cervix, the lower part of the uterus
  • Strongly associated with persistent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection and is highly preventable through screening and vaccination
  • When detected early, cervical cancer has one of the highest cure rates among gynecological cancers

  • Develops in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum)
  • Often diagnosed at an advanced stage because symptoms can be vague and non-specific
  • Common symptoms may include bloating, abdominal discomfort, early satiety, and changes in bowel habits

  • Begins in the uterus, most commonly in the endometrium (lining of the uterus)
  • Often presents with abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Most cases are diagnosed early, making treatment outcomes highly favourable

  • A rare cancer that develops in the tissues of the vagina
  • May be associated with HPV infection and pre-cancerous changes
  • Regular gynecological examinations play an important role in early detection

  • Occurs in the external female genital organs
  • Often develops slowly and may arise from long-standing pre-cancerous lesions
  • Symptoms may include persistent itching, skin changes, or a vulvar lump that warrants evaluation

  • Cancer originating in the fallopian tubes
  • Often managed similarly to ovarian cancer due to shared biological characteristics
  • Advances in molecular testing and targeted therapies have improved treatment options for many patients

  • A group of rare conditions arising from pregnancy-related tissue
  • Highly treatable with specialized care and close monitoring
  • Even when disease has spread, cure rates remain exceptionally high with appropriate treatment

World-Class Diagnostics
& Early Detection

Early detection plays a critical role in successfully treating most gynecological cancers.
Advanced diagnostics significantly improve outcomes and expand treatment options for women with gynecological cancers.

Diagnostics

At Athenaa, our advanced diagnostic capabilities ensure accurate diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning:

  • Pelvic examination and colposcopy
  • Pap smear and HPV testing
  • Advanced pelvic ultrasound imaging
  • MRI and CT scans for local and regional staging
  • PET-CT scans to evaluate disease spread
  • Image-guided biopsies and tissue sampling
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Tumor marker evaluation including CA-125 and other relevant biomarkers
  • Comprehensive molecular profiling

All investigations are interpreted by expert radiologists, pathologists, and molecular specialists experienced in women's cancers.

Screening

Many gynecological cancers can be detected early or prevented through regular screening and risk assessment.

  • Regular screening through pap smears and HPV tests to detect early changes before they become cancer
  • Genetic testing and counselling for hereditary cancers
  • HPV vaccination, available for girls and boys, ideally before becoming sexually active
  • Annual health screening programs, including the Apollo ProHealth Cancer Screening and Apollo ProHealth Well Women Program
  • Personalized and advanced screening programs like Apollo Zen Progra

Routine gynecological examinations and timely screening remain among the most effective tools for reducing cancer-related mortality in women.

Staging of Gynecological Cancers

Gynecological cancers are staged based on the extent of disease spread, involvement of surrounding organs, lymph nodes, and distant sites. Accurate staging helps determine the most appropriate treatment plan and expected outcomes.

Stage I

Cancer is confined to the organ of origin

Stage II

Cancer has spread to nearby pelvic structures but remains localized

Stage III

Cancer involves regional lymph nodes or has spread within the abdominal cavity

Stage IV

Cancer has spread to distant organs beyond the pelvis and abdomen

Our Approach To Treatment

At Athenaa, treatment combines advanced technology with multidisciplinary expertise. Each treatment plan is personalized to balance cancer control, functional preservation, and quality of life.

Surgical Treatment

Surgery remains a cornerstone of gynecological cancer treatment and often offers the greatest opportunity for cure.

  • Robotic-assisted gynecological surgeries for minimally invasive, precision cancer treatment
  • Cytoreductive (debulking) surgeries for removal of visible tumor burden
  • Ultra-radical debulking surgery for advanced disease
  • Pelvic exenteration for recurrent or extensive cancers
  • Radical hysterectomy for removal of uterus and surrounding tissues in advanced disease
  • Trachelectomy for fertility-preserving cervical cancer surgery
  • Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal disease
  • Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) for peritoneal disease
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) for removal of precancerous cervical lesions
  • Fertility preserving surgery to protect future reproductive potential

Our gynecologic oncologists utilize advanced minimally invasive and complex surgical techniques to maximize cancer control while preserving function whenever possible.

  • Precision oncology using molecular profiling
  • Chemotherapy as primary or supportive therapy
  • Targeted therapy for specific tumor markers
  • Immunotherapy for recurrent or metastatic disease
  • Hormonal therapy for hormone-related disease
  • Palliative therapies to control symptoms and maintain quality of life

Our chemotherapy day-care facilities are designed to provide safe, comfortable treatment under expert supervision

Radiation Oncology

Radiation therapy plays a vital role in the treatment of several gynecological cancers and may be used alone or in combination with surgery and systemic therapy.

  • External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) with concurrent chemotherapy
  • Brachytherapy for precise dose delivery with minimal exposure to surrounding organs
  • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) to target metastatic sites or residual nodal disease with precision

Advanced radiation technologies enable precise tumor targeting while protecting surrounding healthy organs and tissues.
